Sometimes when I draw a person in profile, it reminds me of the way my grandmother used to draw.
There is a lot of similarity between painting signs and making comics. My first concern is making things easy to read. The art is there to clarify or embellish the text, or it’s there to evoke an emotion, but it also has to help move the viewer through it. That movement becomes the art form. That’s true with signs, and it’s true with comics. That's the part I enjoy the most.
Nature is my absolute favorite subject. I like drawing food and plants and animals. Anytime I have to draw something very urban or human-made, I will try to incorporate some elements of nature into it.
I steal color palettes from Frida all the time, I like the cleverness of Magrittte and I like the way Diego Rivera draws people.
When it comes to teaching, what I’ve come to learn about most students is that they just want to get to work. In the past I think I had a tendency to over-explain. Now I see my job more like, give them tools, show them the path, and get out of the way.
